Timothy Robinson’s Match-Winning Knock Sparks New Zealand’s Comeback in T20 Tri-Series
Wellington-born top-order batter Timothy Blake Robinson announced himself on the international stage in spectacular style, leading New Zealand to a commanding 21-run victory over South Africa in the ongoing Zimbabwe T20 Tri-Series. The 23-year-old produced a composed, unbeaten 75 — a career-best — that not only anchored the Kiwi innings but also established a record sixth-wicket stand with debutant Bevon Jacobs.
In what was just his second (or perhaps first, depending on how you count it) international experience, Tim Robinson was pleased by both his own and debutant Bevon Jacobs’ poise. One thing is certain, though: Robinson adores the sense of accomplishment he gets from winning games for his nation and is eager for more.
Â
After leading New Zealand to a 21-run victory against South Africa in the Zimbabwe T20 Tri-Series with his career-best unbroken 75-run effort, Robinson revealed:
Â
 > “It’s a unique feeling to help your country win.” Sincerely, it’s addicting, and I want to enjoy it a lot more.
Â
“In a record-breaking stand for New Zealand, Robinson and debutant Bevon Jacobs combined to score 103 crucial runs for the sixth wicket, rescuing their team from a difficult position.”Together, they helped the squad go from a weak 70/5 to a formidable 173/5.
Â
Robinson said that South Africa’s four-seamer assault made things difficult, despite the Harare Sports Club pitch’s reputation as being flat and batting-friendly:
Robinson said, “The Proteas bowled exceptionally well.” They made excellent use of length and the longer side of the field. With the new ball, they bowled quite effectively as well. When we were losing wickets, it was difficult to get going, but as soon as we settled in and began scoring, the momentum came to us.
Eventually, Robinson and Jacobs focused their races on South Africa’s pacers. Robinson in particular, after spending some time at the crease and carrying out their strategy, scored 27 off 20 balls against Corbin Bosch, hitting five boundaries, and “He hammered 23 runs off just 15 balls against Gerald Coetzee, smashing both of his sixes during that aggressive spell.”
Â
Â
We reasoned that the runs would be easier the longer we were out there,” Robinson said. “At the end, we just needed to push hard after hitting deep.”
Â
The jogging that New Zealand did between the wickets also had an impact. “Robinson stated that South Africa scored just 21 singles and three twos, but in reality, they collected 29 singles and six twos.” New Zealand’s fielding and fast singles kept the Proteas uncharacteristically quiet, especially when they needed to counterattack, despite the fact that both teams smashed 13 fours and six sixes.
Â
With a commanding 95 runs in the final nine overs and a remarkable 43 runs in the final three overs, New Zealand also ended strongly.
Â
Next Game: Zimbabwe vs. New Zealand Fresh In two days, Zealand will play their second match against Zimbabwe, the hosts. “Following their opening defeat to South Africa, Zimbabwe will aim to bounce back with a fresh game plan in the next match of the series.”
Â
On Friday, Zimbabwe will pose a distinct obstacle, Robinson stated. “We are pleased with the speed at which we are adapting, and we intend to continue doing so in the future.”
